Google Webmaster Tools Adds “Security Issues” Section

Google has announced the addition of a new section within Webmaster Tools named “Security Issues.” This new section is aimed at better communicating to website owners security issues, such as site hacks, malware, and so on and then giving a more detailed and concise method of fixing the problem and submitting a review request.
In the new security issues section, you’ll be able to:
  • Find more information about the security issues on your site, in one place.
  • Pinpoint the problem faster with detailed code snippets.
  • Request review for all issues in one go through the new simpified process.

Find More Information:

You’ll be able to see all sorts of security issues that may be on your site, including malware code injection, error template injection, SQL injection, content injection for spam and much more.
Here is a screen shot of some of these security issues as seen in Webmaster Tools:

Pinpoint The Security Threat:

Google will then let you zoom into the actual hack or malware, so you can quickly scan your site for a match on that suspicious snippet of code or content. Here is an example of what that may look like:

Easier Review Requests:

Finally, after you fix the issue(s) you can quickly check the box that reads, “I have fixed these issues” and then click the “Request a review” button to expedite the review process. This should expedite the process of removing a malware or hack warning on your site’s Google snippet and/or inclusion of your site back in Google’s search results.

Matt Cutts On Creating More Content For Better Google Rankings

You may think that having more webpages increases your chances of getting better Google rankings. Well, you might be right. Kind of.
This is the topic of the latest Google Webmaster Help video from Matt Cutts.

“I wouldn’t assume that just because you have a large number of indexed pages that you’ll automatically get a higher ranking,” Cutts explains. ” That’s not the case. It is the case that if you have more pages that have different keywords on them, then you have the opportunity where they might be able to rank for the individual queries that a user has. But just having more pages doesn’t automatically mean that you’ll be in good shape or that you’ll get some sort of ranking boost.”

“Now, typically, if a site does have more pages, it might mean that it has more links pointing to it, which means it has higher PageRank,” he continues. “If that’s the case, we might be willing to crawl a little bit deeper into the website, and if it has higher PageRank, then we might think that’s a little bit of a better match for users’ queries. So those are some of the factors involved. Just having a big website with a lot of pages by itself doesn’t automatically confer a boost, but if you have a lot of links or a lot of PageRank, which is leading to deeper crawling within your site, then that might be the sort of indicator that perhaps your site would rank just a little bit higher.”
Cutts again reiterates that just having more pages won’t get you better rankings, but will create more opportunities for links, which can lead to rankings.
So, the takeaway here is that creating more content is probably a good thing. Just compelling stuff that people might want to link to. Unfortunately, that kind of stuff typically takes more time and energy.

Google Removes Your Manual Penalty But Your Rankings Won't Improve

I see threads like this Google Webmaster Help thread all the time. In summary they say, my manual penalty was revoked by Google after I spent the time cleaning up my mistakes but days, months, and even years later, my rankings, traffic and thus sales have not improved at all.
Often, I'll see people get all excited after Google removes a manual action within Google Webmaster Tools, only to see that as false hope.
In early September, I talked about this in a poll I ran asking Does A Manual Action Removal Impact Google Rankings? We have almost two-hundred responses and the sad results are in.
53% said their rankings never improved, even after a year. 12% said they saw a ranking improvement within days, 14% said within a month, 8% said within 3 months, 7% within 6 months and 7% within a year. But 53% said never.
I didn't ask if they saw a full recovery. If I did, I suspect that 53% number to jump to 90% or higher.
Often, when it is a link penalty, the removal of the penalty doesn't help much. Why? Because those links that once counted, no longer do and thus the rankings will not return until you garner new, quality links.

But with content or other spam issues, why no recovery?
Have you seen the same? Do you agree with this poll?

Google Closing Authorship Project?

AJ Kohn, someone who focuses more on authorship and rich snippets than most SEOs I know, wrote a story named Authorship Is Dead, Long Live Authorship.
In that story, he describes why he thinks the classic Authorship Project is slowing being closed down. In short, he thinks that because classic authorship is opt in, it isn't easy to scale at the size Google needs. So Google uses other methods to extract authorship/rich snippet like data from sources to show the richer data in the search results.
He also notes that Othar Hansson, who worked in the authorship side of search has left to work on Android in the past six months.
AJ wrote:
Authorship then becomes about Google's ability to extract entities from documents, matching those entities to a corpus that contains descriptors of that entity (i.e. – social profiles, official page(s), subjects) and then measuring the activity around that entity....
...The presence of Authorship markup might increase the confidence level of the match but it will likely play a supporting and refining role instead of the defining role in the process.
So what he means is that what you see in the search results, the authorship display, is not dead. But maybe requiring webmasters to mark up their content and if they trust that markup, is dying.

Penguin 2.1 Recovery Plans – Reclaim your rank now!!

Proven Six Step Penguin 2.1 Recovery Strategy

Google’s Penguin 2.1 has impacted a lot of websites as it has gone deeper to look for spam, analyzing internal pages as opposed to just the homepage of websites in the earlier Penguin 1.0 update . The problem being addressed here was unnatural, manipulative inbound link profiles. What makes a bad link profile?
Google focused on links that were from
• Automated link exchanges
• Low quality article submissions
• Artificial blog networks
• Fake Profiles
• Blog Comment Spam
• Site wide Link Spam (Header/Footer Link)
• Artificial Blogrolls
• Network websites
• Link Exchange Site (reciprocal sites)
• Malware Attacked sites
• Paid links and Link farms
• Adult websites
• Irrelevant websites
• Foreign language websites
• Domain expired sites
• Sites with server error
• Poor quality sites
• Links from Class C IP
• Links where the anchor text is overly optimized (i.e., exact-match anchor text)
if you had indulged in buying mass links, spamming low quality directory sites with your links, or comments spamming, there’s a good chance your site was affected by the Penguin 2.1 update.

How To Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools?

How To Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools?

To be successful in your blogging career you must have to generate decent organic traffic to your blog. By the term “organic traffic” I mean the traffic which comes to your blog through search engines like Google. If you are a new blogger then you should be aware with the Google Webmaster Tools. This is a great tool which is provided by Google itself. It helps your blog being indexed in Google and improve its crawling rate. You just need to verify your blog ownership in Google Webmaster Tools and then submit a simple sitemap. It is very important to submit blogger sitemap to Google in terms of SEO which tells Google about your blog and its content. Whenever you update your blog with new posts, your sitemap helps to index them easily in search engines. This is the topic of my today’s post. Let see how to add blogger sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools.

Submit Blogger Sitemap To Google Webmaster Tools

Below are some easy steps you have to go through in terms to submit your blogspot blog sitemap.
  • Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools.
  • Click on the blog title for which you want to add sitemap.
  • Click on sitemap button as shown below.
sitemap button
  • At the top right corner of the page, press Add/Test sitemap button.
add/test sitemap
  • Once you click on the button, a small box will appear as shown in the screenshot below.
blog sitemap
  • Add the below code in the text field.
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
This is the sitemap code for your blogger blog which you need to add.
  • Press “Submit Sitemap” button.
  • Refresh the page.
Congratulation! You have finish the process of submitting your blog sitemap.

Note: The above sitemap will work for 500 posts only. If you have more than 500 posts published in your blog, then you have to add one more sitemap. Whole procedure will be same but at this time you have to add this code.
atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=500&max-results=1000

How to Add Custom Robots.txt file in Blogger

What is Robots.txt?

Robots.txt is a text file which contains few lines of simple code. It is saved on the website or blog’s server which instruct the web crawlers to how to index and crawl your blog in the search results. That means you can restrict any web page on your blog from web crawlers so that it can’t get indexed in search engines like your blog labels page, your demo page or any other pages that are not as important to get indexed. Always remember that search crawlers scan the robots.txt file before crawling any web page.
Each blog hosted on blogger have its default robots.txt file which is something look like this:
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED

Explanation

This code is divided into three sections. Let’s first study each of them after that we will learn how to add custom robots.txt file in blogspot blogs.

  1. User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
This code is for Google Adsense robots which help them to serve better ads on your blog. Either you are using Google Adsense on your blog or not simply leave it as it is.
  • User-agent: *
This is for all robots marked with asterisk (*). In default settings our blog’s labels links arerestricted to indexed by search crawlers that means the web crawlers will not index our labels page links because of below code.
Disallow: /search
That means the links having keyword search just after the domain name will be ignored. See below example which is a link of label page named SEO.
http://www.bloggertipstricks.com/search/label/SEO
And if we remove Disallow: /search from the above code then crawlers will access our entire blog to index and crawl all of its content and web pages.
Here Allow: / refers to the Homepage that means web crawlers can crawl and index our blog’s homepage.
Disallow Particular Post
Now suppose if we want to exclude a particular post from indexing then we can add below lines in the code.
Disallow: /yyyy/mm/post-url.html
Here yyyy and mm refers to the publishing year and month of the post respectively. For example if we have published a post in year 2013 in month of March then we have to use below format.
Disallow: /2013/03/post-url.html
To make this task easy, you can simply copy the post URL and remove the blog name from the beginning.
Disallow Particular Page
If we need to disallow a particular page then we can use the same method as above. Simply copy the page URL and remove blog address from it which will something look like this:
Disallow: /p/page-url.html
  • Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED
This code refers to the sitemap of our blog. By adding sitemap link here we are simply optimizing our blog’s crawling rate. Means whenever the web crawlers scan our robots.txt file they will find a path to our sitemap where all the links of our published posts present. Web crawlers will find it easy to crawl all of our posts. Hence, there are better chances that web crawlers crawl all of our blog posts without ignoring a single one.
Note: This sitemap will only tell the web crawlers about the recent 25 posts. If you want to increase the number of link in your sitemap then replace default sitemap with below one. It will work for first 500 recent posts

How to block a web site in Windows 7

How to block a web site in Windows 7
Windows operating system is having some many features that are not visible to all. One such feature is blocking the web sites which we don't want to see. You children may browser your system and you want to block some known sites like games, other adult sites. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating system you can block the sites without any 3rd party software.

All you need to do is to add the web sites in hosts file which is in Windows system folder. This is not a new concept which exists in old version of Windows operating system. It requires administrator permission to modify and save the hosts file.

Host file will map the IP address to a host and it is controlled by the administrator of the system.

To block Web sites

Open the location C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and you can see a list of files.

Open the hosts file in a notepad and you can a default address with 126.0.0.1 and localhost. Below that add the web sites that you want to block. One web site can be added in one line (check the below screen shot) Enter the Default IP address and the website address name
All the IP address should be 127.0.0.1 and the web sites can be any web sites that you want to block. Once you added all the web sites save the file. Even as a administrator you cannot edit the file. You need to assign permission to edit the file and you can start editing the file. Any time you can edit the hosts file and you can add or remove the web sites to allow or block.

Do not depend on this host's file alone. You can use some software to block the web sites. Make this file as ready only so that the other standard uses cannot modify the hosts file.

Google+ Saved Searches Are Going Away On November 15th

Google is getting rid of the”saved searches” feature in Google+, but if you actually use it, you probably already knew that. It’s more likely that you don’t use it or haven’t used it lately. Otherwise, it probably wouldn’t be going away.
Google is alerting users of the news when they go to actually look at one of the searches they have saved. If you have saved one in the past, it appears in your list of Circles. If you go to “more,” they should show up at the bottom. If you select one, you’ll get a message saying, “Saved searches are going away. Bookmark this page on your browser to save your Google+ search for later.”
If you click the link to “learn more,” Google suggests that you save your searches by simply bookmarking the results page in your web browser. It also says you’ll be able to access the existing saved searches from the “more” menu until November 15th.

I doubt the feature will be missed very much. You can obviously still bookmark them like Google suggests, but really, how hard is it to just enter a search anyway? It takes almost as much effort to go to the “more” menu and find it.
The way Google has had it set up has been a bit confusing anyway. There’s no clear differentiation between the save searches and the Circles in the list. If you’re like me, you have saved searches and Circles with identical names, and I have to admit, it’s tricked me in the past.

Video: Google Matt Cutts Hints At Upcoming SEO Changes At PubCon

One of the highlights of the year for me is Matt Cutts talk at PubCon. So me not being there, being 6,000+ miles away, was unfortunate. It was the first PubCon I've missed in, well, I can't remember.
Anyway, there was some excellent note taking of his presentation, plus PubCon streamed it live, so I saw a glimpse of it. I wanted to pull out the highlights and most important things Matt shared, specific to topics SEOs should be concerned with for the end of this year and 2014.

First, the live blogging I took this from include Bruce Clay, Search Engine Journal, Pole Vault Media, Search Mojo, Search Engine Land and Google+ via Brian Patterson. Of course, there is a ton of Twitter action from the event.
  • Black Hat Hacking will be a core topic Google's web spam team will focus on. They hope to go after the hard core hacking tactics and reduce that impact on the search results.
  • Child pornography will be blocked significantly in all countries, not just the US.
  • Toolbar PageRank may or may not be fixed. The "pipeline" to export the quarterly data broke and Google has no immediate plans to fix it.
  • Mobile is going to be a key area in 2014, so pay attention to it.
  • Autocomplete, look to add requestAutocomplete to your forms.
  • Top Ad Heavy Algo will get refreshed in a big way, see the previous update over here.
  • Authorship 15% Reduction - Google is going to get picky on who they show authorship rich snippets for. So don't be surprised if yours goes away, look for ways to make yourself more authoritative. This includes rich snippets for your site...
  • Better At JavaScript so don't be surprised to find out what Google gets into.
Update: Here is the video of Matt's talk:

Google Penalty On WWW Revoked But Remains On Non-WWW

WebmasterWorld thread has an interesting discussion around how a webmaster said his manual penalty was revoked on his WWW but remains on his non WWW.
The non WWW is 301 redirected to the WWW and the WWW is set as the preferred domain in Webmaster Tools.
The webmaster with this problem said:
A site I watch has a manual penalty. After a lot of link cleaning and reconsideration request, Google has revoked penalty on www version, while penalty on non-www version stays. Both www and non-www versions verified in WMT and 301 redirected from non-www to www.
Its about a week now since penalty on www was revoked and the site doesn't even rank for domain.com.
Have you ever seen this case, where the WWW vs the non WWW don't have timed penalties properly?

Google Is Apparently Reducing Authorship In Results

Matt Cutts spoke at Pubcon in Las Vegas, discussing numerous SEO topics as usual. Bruce Clay has a pretty good basic recap here.
You can see 25 minutes of his speech here:
There doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of big news to come out of the keynote. He discussed a lot of the things Google has been doing that everybody already knows about. He did say that Google is going to be working on combatting hacking and child porn in the coming months, and noted that the reason that Toolbar PageRank hasn’t been updated is because the export feature that sends the data to the toolbar broke, and they didn’t bother to fix it. It’s unclear if they will bother in the future. My guess is no. Trends for webmasters to think about going forward, according to Cutts, include making sure your site looks good on mobile devices, annotating your forms for autocomplete and rich snippets (on reputable sites). Google is also getting better at Javascript. Meanwhile, the page layout algorithm will start having a greater impact on Arabic and Russian sites. One interesting nugget to come out of Cutts’ speech is that Google is apparently going to be reducing the amount of authorship results it shows by 15%, saying that this will improve quality. Google reportedly still sees authorship as a key signal, they just want to “tighten” it to make sure it’s really relevant and useful, from what I gather.
